Eat Drink Opening

The opening for Eat Drink Man Woman apparently took a week to film.  One of the dishes featured looks like it is Chine Pine Nut Fish, so-called because the carp fillet used is scored and so has a pine cone appearance.

In the following video on the dishes preparation, you'll note similar scenes.

  1. In my opinion, this film has shown the most artistry in food prep out of all the movies we've watched so far. Sihung Lung shows some amazing culinary talents. The way he chopped, diced, filleted, and worked with the food was so graceful. Like I commented in class, he moved like a well-oiled machine. I feel he definitely has more culinary talent than any other actor we have seen thus far. And if this is not the case, Ang Lee did a wonderful job convincing me!

    1. I agreed, Its amazing to think that it was an actor and not a culinary professional. I think a lot of credit has to go to the actor in addition to the director as well.

  2. I wondered what type of fish that was and noticed the pine cone appearance. Sihung Lung put so much work in the preparation of the food. It was almost exhausting to watch him work. It was as if food was his escape from dealing with life. This is so true to real life as we throw ourselves into work and staying busy just so we don't have to tackle the areas in our life we just want to avoid.

  3. I like the how to video so it makes me believe that I could that. Of course I am not talented in the kitchen but how awesome it would be just to try and be surprised.

I believe that the movie had three different chefs preparing the meals for the movie scenes so it wasn't the actor doing the cooking. Notice the hands are visible but not the face. Still is was amazing to watch the talent on the movie screen.

  4. This is a fantastic opening sequence. I know it was discussed in class that he looked bored. I actually never had that feeling AT ALL. We were being introduced to a master of his craft, and within his element, creating his "pieces". Little did we know at the time, that, he had lost his touch....but nevertheless, he kept up with appearances, with an almost effortless craftsmanship.
